Re: Alignment issue observed when cutting spoil board

Hi, Just a guess, it looks like you used a 1.5 or 2 inch tool to cut the surface. Unless you usually use a large tool or you make deep cuts or need to cut precision slots, it probably wont make a difference. As a retired toolmaker I checked my spindle as soon as I got my Comet. The easiest way to sq...

Re: Reviews, Gripes, ETC.

A few years ago the college I worked for purchased a Comet that we needed to be portable. Here is the video that describes what I did. After more than a year of moving the Comet by 'folding' it I never noticed any issues with accuracy or twisting.

Re: Only one y axis motor turning

I have a Comet and it ran great for about a year. My rotary axis suddenly would run in only one direction and I tried everything mentioned below and then some. I wanted to pull my hair out (tough because I shave my head). Eventually I put an ohm meter on the parallel cable and found an open wire. Af...

Re: setting up a network on LinuxCNC Control PC

I have a wireless network attached to my pc, however I keep it turned off unless I actually need it. I also have all auto updates disabled. I created a new email strictly for my comet (comet@???.com) and just email programs from my design computer. A lot less hassle than using flash drives that I ca...

Funny how we can do something for more than 40 years and still learn something new. Excellent resource, thanks!

Re: Sign making on Comet

Cheap laminate flooring. It doesn't seem to hurt the bit too much. I have cut dozens of signs for the college similar in size and the bit (Harbor freight carbide classic Roman w/ 1/8" tip radius) is still working strong. My experience in the past with tooling is most problems with tooling is no...

Portable Comet

I'm not sure if Len approves of making the Comet portable, but I didn't have much choice because of the necessity of moving the Comet from the classroom to the shop on a regular basis. In 2 years I had not noticed any appreciable flexing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csZCRZE2A_A

Re: V Bits

I've had decent results using all varieties of Harbor Freight router bits. Decent price and they last about as long as the expensive ones. You might want to invest in collets for your particular brand of router. For about $100 I bought a variety of collets for my DeWalt giving me the option to use b...

Greetings from South Texas

I'm Rick from the Rio Grande Valley, formerly from Central Illinois. I am a retired toolmaker with extensive experience in machines of all types and tape NC and CNC from the mid '70s. I've used several CAD/CAM systems over the years and with a few exceptions I find it easier to just write my own pro...
