Computer won't turn off- help

Postby KenW » Wed Aug 02, 2017 7:27 pm

Several times now after I've made some parts I shut down the Probotics program, then shut down the computer only to come back later and see the screen with UBUNTU in the middle and the 5 dots below blinking from left to right. Only way then is to hold in the power key until it shuts down.
Anyone know why this is happening? Am I doing something wrong?

I can't be positive without seeing your Linux PC setup, but here is one thing to consider:

Have you installed any other software on that PC? The machine may hang when trying to close a program before shutting down if the program won't be closed without saving work or finishing some routine. This doesn't have to be a program you can see running.

Hi 4D,
No, haven't installed anything at all...wanting to keep it dedicated to my Asteroid. I did have it connected to the internet while looking for a way to network with my other PC, but have disconnected the cable because I heard something about the program trying to update, and didn't want anything to get messed up. I do transfer my files using a USB drive and sometimes leave it plugged into the computer. Could that be the problem?

Yes, a USB Drive may have a driver associated with it that Linux sees running when the drive is still in place. Easy way to tell... safely eject that drive before you shutdown the PC and see if it turns off reliably if the drive isn't plugged in.

Sorry to be a bit obtuse here, but can you advise how to eject safely on the linux? I know how to do this on my pc, but still learning my way around the linux.

Right-click on the drive icon to see options for safe ejecting and other things.

So did you get it to shut off on its own?
