MondoStep Thoughts with a Planet-CNC MK2/4

Postby jdkerr » Sun Sep 27, 2015 6:54 pm

Looking for some guidance.

Wondering if there is anyone out there running a machine with a Planet-CNC MK2/4 controller and one of the MondoStep drivers? I am considering this to drive my V90 with yellow steppers (280 OzIn 8-wires steppers) with the 40v linear power supply.

Thoughts?

Len,
Please correct me if I'm wrong. I don't want to steer someone the wrong way.

I have V90, Mk3, Yellow steppers, Probostep drivers

I believe no changes need be made on the controller side. The ribbon cable stripped and connected to MondoStep driver

Literature indicates Mondostep 4.2 driver is Bi-Polar.

whereas ProboStep driver is UniPolar.
http://www.probotix.com/manuals/ProboStepVX.pdf

Therefore I think the Stepper motor must be rewired to make the change.

Although diagram indicate MondoStep 7.8 I believe it is the same as MondoStep 4.2

I am waiting for Len's comment before I place my order

Yes the Probostep driver is unipolar - and has been discontinued. There is only one manufacturer of a unipolar stepper motor driver chip in the world (Sanken). We migrated to bipolar drivers and stopped making ProboSteps when we began to question the quality control on those SLA chips around November 2014.

The MondoStep 4.2 and 7.8 drivers are both Bipolar so you are correct the motor MUST be rewired from unipolar to bipolar - or just wired for bipolar if not doing a conversion. Here is a diagram showing the wiring difference (note the color scheme may be different if they are NOT our motors - in that case use the key to find your A+/A+ B+/B- pairs. The bipolar wiring just takes the 8 wires down to 4 leads.

Here is a video showing a rewire of a machine from unipolar to bipolar for anyone switching driver types on a Galaxy series (Comet/Nebula etc) machine:

Please let me know if this is unclear or if you need any further help.

Thank you!!!

Thanks for the information, very helpful. In reviewing the diagrams ( X3_conversion_kit_wiring_diagram.pdf and 8wire_to_4wire_bipolar.pdf ) they seem to indicate different motor phases. Will this make a difference when installed, or will the motors just spin the opposite direction?

The differences were:

X3_conversion_kit_wiring_diagram.pdf
Red/Blue to A+
Black/Yellow to A-
White/Brown to B+
Orange/Green to B-

8wire_to_4wire_bipolar.pdf file
Red/Blue to B-
Black/Yellow to B+
White/Brown to A-
Orange/Green to A+

It should not matter because you are using it on your own machine, but yes the motors would turn the other way. The X3 diagram is just how we used to wire up bipolar the new conversion diagram is how we wire them now and they spin in the opposite direction. As long as your phases match up you will be good.
