Extending an X90

Postby davbro » Sun Nov 19, 2017 5:59 pm

I'm thinking about what it would take to extend the work area of my X90. I know that the x-axis on this machine is prone to twisting, so was thinking about extending the y-axis. Assuming I can get the hardware (rails, and ACME threaded rod) in a longer length, what is the feasibility of extending the y-axis to 36"? How much slop will I introduce, and would a 3rd rail help to minimize that?

Thanks in advance,

First part of my X90 expansion done. I am replacing the MDF gantry supports and MDF base supports with .75" aluminum for stiffness. The local machine shop was able to mill these for me using the old parts as a guide. The x-axis will be 8" wider. The y-axis will depend on what I can get for lead screw length, but I am still looking at 36".
