Walnut Urn

Postby HANNAH024 » Sun Dec 09, 2018 10:59 pm

A friend's wife and fellow church member asked me if I would make an urn for her husband's ashes which are to be entombed in a stone wall of the area veteran's cemetery in January 2019. I made the urn from Missouri Black Walnut which I have had air drying for the past 30 years. After cutting the rough boards to 24" lengths and planning the 12 inch wide boards to one inch thick all of the remaining cutting was done on my Probotix Comet CNC router. The sides were reduced to 1/2 inch thickness except for the picture frame that was integrated into each of the side pieces. The frame has a groove on the inside at the bottom of the frame for a picture with a slightly domed plastic cover to snap into. I did not want end grain showing on the corners where the sides came together so I cut 0.505 inch wide grooves in two adjacent faces of 1 inch square pieces which became vertical corner posts when the urn was assembled. His wife told me that he liked dogwood and the stained glass windows in the church building. So I incorporated carved dogwood blossoms in the top of the urn along with his name, date of birth and accidental death. Two of the sides have pictures of the church's stained glass windows, the front shows his picture and the back has a picture of him and his wife. Here are some pictures of the urn.
